McShane portrayed Al Swearengen, the foul mouthed and murderous proprietor of the Gem Saloon. Although largely fictionalised in the series, the character was inspired by Ellis Alfred Swearengen who opened the first Gem Variety Theater and Dance Hall in Deadwood in 1877.
